Glass-enclosed modern home wine cellar with custom floor-to-ceiling Alder racks designed to hold up to 1,500 wine bottles.
When we design modern home wine cellars, we’re not thinking about storage alone. We’re thinking about how the space will feel the moment someone approaches it, how the temperature holds steady without a sound, how the materials age gracefully over time, and how the cellar becomes part of the homeowner’s daily rhythm.
This Dunwoody, Atlanta modern home wine cellars project gave us the opportunity to do exactly that. Working hands-on from concept through construction, our team at Custom Wine Cellars Atlanta, alongside Coastal Custom Wine Cellars, created a residential glass wine cellar that balances transparency, performance, and personal expression without compromise.

A Glance Inside Modern Home Wine Cellars Through This Barolo Door
We always say the wine cellar experience begins before the first bottle is seen. For this project in Dunwoody, Atlanta, we designed a stained Barolo door to serve as both the architectural threshold and the emotional cue that something special lies beyond.
Structurally, we built the door using exterior-grade Laminated Veneer Lumber (LVL). We chose LVL because it outperforms traditional sawn lumber in stability—meaning no warping, no twisting, and no long-term seal failure. That level of reliability matters when you’re protecting a serious wine collection.
The stained glass insert was customized to the homeowner’s aesthetic preferences. During the day, it filters natural light into the room with subtle color variation. At night, it reflects the interior lighting outward. Even years later, the stained glass continues to perform visually from both sides of the door, exactly as intended.
Creating a Transitional Lounge Before the Cellar
Rather than pushing visitors straight into the cellar, our wine cellar designers intentionally designed a sitting area just beyond the Barolo door. This space was curated to slow the experience down.
We worked closely with the homeowner to align furniture, art, and décor with his love for wine and visual design. The goal was to create a place where tasting, conversation, and appreciation could happen comfortably—before stepping into the refrigerated environment.
For us, this transition matters. A wine cellar shouldn’t feel rushed or utilitarian. It should feel earned.
