Another stunning residential wine cellar was built by our wine cellar design and construction team.  This is a wine cellar conversion project where we transformed a small space under the stairway into a stunning home wine storage room.  What’s unique about this wine cellar is the combination of various wine racking systems, wine cellar artwork, and wine barrel flooring.  Learn more about this beautiful home wine cellar project to get inspiration for your dream wine cellar in Atlanta!

Stylish Features of the Residential Wine Cellar

The room that we converted into a wine cellar under the stairs.  It was originally a closet with an L-shape structure.  The ceiling slants into a height of 64 inches because the room is directly under the stairway.

The odd shape of the room is a bit of a challenge for the design team, so we utilized various custom wine racking systems to fit the room’s configuration and maximize every available space.  The design team was able to create a total storage capacity of 404 wine bottles, which is outstanding considering the limited space!

The Custom Designed Wooden Wine Racks for a Traditional Residential Wine Cellar

The combination of different wine racking systems makes this Atlanta residential wine cellar unique.  Upon entering, there is a horizontal display wine rack on the left side that stores wine in a label-forward orientation.  This allows for easy bottle recognition and full visibility of wine labels.  The top portion of this wine rack features a step stair design, which aligns with the slope of the ceiling.

At the back wall is a different wine rack design.  There are diamond bins at the bottom for bulk wine storage and individual bottle storage racking with a high-reveal display row above.  The single bottle storage racking fits most standard 750 ml wine bottles. The opening of each slot measures 3 3/4 by 3 3/4 inches, which is perfect for easy bottle access.

The high-reveal display row showcases the owner’s favorite vintages at a 15-degree angle.  This distinctive design allows for a full view of the wine labels while making sure that the content is still in contact with the cork, which is necessary to prevent drying out of the cork thus maintaining a tight seal.

When the cork dries out, it will become brittle and decrease in size, allowing an unwanted amount of to enter the bottle and oxidize the wine. This can result in unpleasant flavors. At the end wall are additional single bottle storage custom wine racks and open bins for more bulk wine storage.

The Residential Wine Cellar Cooling System

WhisperKOOL Split Wine Cellar Refrigeration System

A WhisperKOOL Platinum Mini Split Wine Cellar Cooling System is installed just above the wine rack at the end wall.  The split type of cooling unit is perfect for this small-sized wine cellar because it comes with two components – the evaporator and the condenser.

The evaporator is placed inside the wine room, while the condenser is placed in a separate area.  This maximizes the storage space and reduces heat and noise inside the cellar.

There are different types of wine cellar refrigeration on the market, so it is ideal to work with a wine cellar expert to help you choose the right one.  WhisperKOOL is one of the most trusted brands of wine cellar refrigeration systems by wine cellar builders in Atlanta. They efficiently maintain the ideal wine storage environment for optimum wine aging. They are also engineered to create a virtually quiet environment and offer installation flexibility.

The Remarkable Wine Barrel Flooring

Unique Wine Barrel Flooring for an Eco-Friendly Residential Wine Cellar

The wine cellar flooring is another unique feature of this residential wine cellar.  It is made of reclaimed cooperage components from old oak wine barrels. Using old wine barrels for flooring will help reduce waste in landfills and add aesthetic value to homes.

The top portion of the wine barrel is called the cooperage which usually bears the stamps and markings of the winery.  The markings produce a distinct and striking appearance to the flooring.  In addition, using old oak wine barrels supports environmental sustainability.

The client chose a custom-designed Seville-style glass wine cellar door.  This type of wine cellar door is made to last as it is made of laminated veneer lumber (LVL), wrought iron, and dual-paned glass.  The operable wrought iron gate has a latch, so it can be opened and closed when cleaning is necessary.

It is installed with mortise and tenon and an automatic door bottom to ensure durability and functionality.

The Attractive Wine Cellar Art Painting

This stunning residential custom wine cellar under the stairs boasts a beautiful faux grapevine painting by Janina Pazdan, who is an impressionist artist from Poland.

Wine cellar accessories like wall paintings add more life and personality to the wine room.  Other wine cellar art pieces that can be added are murals, figurines, sculptures, and more.
